ARTIST STORY

Process and the act of making art is what interest me most, the physicality of it all.

I work with acrylic paint, water color, and mixed media: ink, paint markers, silkscreen methods, colored pencils, oil pastels, glitter, the innards of tea bags, gold leaf etc. The subject matter of my work varies as much as my interests. The commonality lies within my gestural brush work.

My collages include re-contextualizing found images and my own recycled work which disseminates something new through any altered format. These compositions are often heavily textured in layers of paint and gesso, each layer adding a new narrative of texture.

My abstract work is not premeditative, but impulsive much like that of sporadic movement. Much of my work consists of gestures that encourage direct experience and invite emotional identification, with the suggestion of imagined territory.

I am inspired by the rhythm of both music and dance and its ability to evoke a visceral reaction. As a former dancer I bring a history of the female form and choreography into my work. When painting, I think in terms of physical space and how it is interrupted by form, especially encompassing interpersonal space people occupy.

To quote Willem Dekooning, “I paint this way because I can keep putting more and more things into it- drama, anger, pain, love…”
